Montevallo Downtown Redevelopment

Gresham Smith and Partners designed Montevallo’s Downtown Redevelopment Master Plan to unify the look and feel of the city’s downtown, create connectivity among downtown destinations and improve mobility and safety. Located on 13 blocks between the University of Montevallo and Orr Park, proposed improvements include enhancing the streetscape to better the pedestrian experience, reconfiguring parking layout and circulation, rehabilitating and replacing utility and developing a pedestrian corridor between the university and the park.

Providence Hospital Renovations

Renovations to patient suites within the Louise Robinson Moorer Women’s Center at Providence Hospital in Mobile won first place in the healthcare category for Alice Cutright, ASID/LEED AP of TAG/The Architects Group at the recent ASID convention. The project entailed demolishing existing rooms and creating larger ones for labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum patients. Furniture, finishes and colors were selected to convey a non-clinical atmosphere creating a more personal and comfortable experience for the family.

Urbane Downtown Residence

119 20th Street , a former rundown office and alley in downtown Birmingham, has been transformed into a simple yet sophisticated urban residence at $90 per square foot. Architect Michael Gibson in association with Appleseed Workshop of Birmingham renovated the 2,000-square-foot, two-story space into a two-bedroom, two-and-a half-bath home with gourmet kitchen and private roof deck. An open-tread stair of steel and wood fabricated by the architect and bathed in light from a roof lantern is the home’s defining element.

Project M’s Pie Lab

A Greensboro pie shop and design studio share the same space in a project founded by nonprofits Project M and Hale Empowerment and Revitalization Organization (HERO). At Pie Lab, graphic designers engage the community while focusing on projects that can have a positive impact in the area. Their creed: "Pie + Conversation = Ideas / Ideas + Design = Positive Change." Recent projects include creating a Web site for the Hale Co. Humane Society and a new logo for the City of Northport.

Bessemer City High School

The new Bessemer City High School opened to students in January with brightly colored walls and floors and wide halls, an airy lunchroom with both traditional and bistro tables and a 750-seat auditorium. The entrance atrium’s curtain wall of glass floods the hallway with daylight, while glass block insets and clerestory windows punctuate the interior wall. A 5,500-seat athletic complex remains under construction. Davis Architects of Birmingham is the architect of this $55 million, 226,000-square-foot project.

Beyond The Motor City

On June 19th, DesignAlabama along with the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Capri Community Film Society will host a screening of the PBS documentary BluePrint America: Beyond The Motor City .  The movie examines how Detroit, the image of a dimishining American city, may in turn become the representation of future transportation and progress in America. The movie will show at 2 p.m. and will be followed by a panel discussion led by a number of planners and professionals including Ken Groves, city planner for Montgomery.
