Town of Hampstead

A new showcase for town planning and architecture has emerged at Hampstead on Taylor Road in east Montgomery. A project of The Colonial Company, the new urbanist development master planned by DPZ of Miami has two buildings designed by the Gary Justiss/Turner Batson Architects joint venture fronting the handsome town square. Tenants include Number Sixteen Restaurant & Market, a YMCA Y’s Up Gym and the newest restaurant, Farmhouse Kitchen, opening in June.

Bottega Restaurant Redesign

Remodeling a celebrated local restaurant is not to be taken lightly, but Hatcher Design Associates of Birmingham made sure moves with recent alterations at Bottega in its landmark Highland Avenue building.

Greek Orthodox Church Plaza

A need to improve accessibility has been turned into a fine new entrance plaza for the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Birmingham’s city center. Designed by Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio of Birmingham, the 9,000-square-foot, $435,000 project removed the existing limestone steps from the doorway and rebuilt them closer to the street. A new low limestone wall extending the width of the church accommodates the new handicap ramp and also creates a visual base for the building.

Bottega Restaurant Redesign
Greek Orthodox Church Plaza

National Alabama Rail Car Plant

A 2.1-million-square-foot National Alabama Corp. rail car manufacturing plant is nearing completion on a 640-acre tract in Barton Riverfront Industrial Park in Colbert County. Albert Kahn, an architectural/engineering firm headquartered in Detroit with an office in Birmingham, designed the $350 million greenfield project. The Shoals plant has a linear design to accommodate the nearly 1-mile production process for manufacturing rail cars.

Lowering 1-20/59 Through Downtown Birmingham

Operation New Birmingham with support from the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex and Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham is conducting a feasibility study on lowering the 1-20/59 viaduct that separates the Civic Center District from downtown. The $700 million conversion would depress the travel lanes and construct parallel, grade-level boulevards creating a grand urban space to benefit aesthetics, safety, connectivity and traffic flow while reducing pollution.

State Park Lodge Upgrades

As part of a $100 million bond-financed state park overhaul, Guntersville State Park’s new $25 million lodge, hotel and restaurant designed by the Birmingham office of Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood opened in 2008. At Lakepoint State Park in Eufaula, construction on the lodge and convention center designed by Donofro + Walker Architects of Dothan is slated to be completed in August 2009. Refurbished cabins, 10 new lakeside cottages and the renovated restaurant are already open.

Cityville Block 121

Construction has begun on Cityville Block 121, a $35 million, mixed-use development in downtown Birmingham. The 255-unit community of contemporary apartments and townhomes with 21,000 square-feet of retail at street level is scheduled to open in 2010. Amenities include swimming pool, clubhouse, Internet lounge, fitness center and covered parking deck. Niles Bolton & Associates of Atlanta is the architect.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

In January, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute unveiled a $2.5 million renovation and expansion of its exhibit space. Amaze Design, the Boston firm responsible for the institute’s original exhibit designs, created the new displays. The remodel incorporates enhanced technology in the museum exhibits, as in the newly renovated Human Rights Gallery, which features interactive multimedia stations.
