Wind Creek Spa & Cooking School

For the new Wind Creek Spa & Cooking School located adjacent to the new Wind Creek Casino & Hotel near Atmore in south Alabama, interior designers with Brown Chambless Architects of Montgomery selected materials and finishes that echo the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ traditional links to nature.

Calera Comprehensive Plan

A citywide comprehensive plan was adopted by the City of Calera Planning Commission in August 2009. Sponsored by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham and prepared with the help of planners with KPS Group and traffic engineers at Skipper Consulting Inc., it grew out of a series of town meetings held in the Shelby County community.

Phelan Flats

Like a number of other Birmingham firms, Herrington Architects uses a renovated city center loft-style building for its studios. But now the firm has added another component in its commitment to urbanism: Greenvine Properties. The in-house development company has completed Phelan Flats, an in-town rental residential project seeking LEED Gold certification.

Phelan Flats

Red Mountain Park, Phase I

Wallace Roberts & Todd of Philadelphia produced a conceptual manual in 2009 to show the phased approach to Red Mountain Park’s development. The initial phase focuses on the Red Mountain Center to house visitor orientation, concessions and meeting space. Mine #10 will demonstrate the story of mining via a series of walkways, gathering spaces and structures. Redwood Commons, occupying the valley, will provide open space and picnic areas. Also included are the knoll, mining heritage sites, the north and south gateways and parking areas.

Jefferson County Eastern Health Center

The 4,500-square-foot Eastern Health Center in Birmingham, built with sustainable and recycled materials, employed energy efficient systems and products from light sensors to waterless toilets. The project by Designform of Birmingham garnered honorable mention in the 2009 AIA awards. To complement the environmental- and health-friendly aspects of the $7.7 million clinic, the Southern Environmental Center of Birmingham Southern University built an adjacent 3.8-acre ‘ecoscape’ with gardens and trails.

Decatur Streetscape Plan

Phase I of the $1.2 million streetscape plan designed by Godwin Barnett of Decatur to upgrade 2nd Avenue has been submitted by the city to ALDOT for review. Funded by a $712,000 transportation enhancement grant paired with portions of $570,000 in a federal appropriation for streetscape, the project covers expanded angle parking and installation of new landscaping, street furniture, pedestrian lighting and enhanced pavement. As part of Phase II, lower Bank Street will also receive similar improvements. Phase III will focus on Lee Street.

My BodyWorks Exhibit

The most technologically advanced health sciences exhibit in the nation is permanently installed at Mobile’s Gulf Coast Exploreum. The exhibit, designed by Exploreum’s director of exhibit design, Peter Feher, consists of more than 2,000 square feet of displays including more than 50 interactive exhibits and a fully functional bio lab. A special feature is an interactive program that allows visitors to perform bloodless surgery, which was designed by Somerset Group of Huntsville.

Auburn Opelika Airport Terminal

The Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport is on schedule for opening its new terminal in spring 2010. Designed by Infinity Architecture of Montgomery, the 25,000-square-foot building features a curved metal roof with glass window walls and brass and masonry details. The structure houses a two-story atrium/lobby, administration offices, conference room plus additional space for lease and features a covered drop-off area and runway-viewing balcony.
